Example 2

Question: \[13 - 5\left( {x + 2} \right) = 2\left( {3x - 4} \right)\] Solution:
\(13 - 5x + 10 = 6x - 4\) (line 1)

\( - 5x - 6x = - 4 + 13 - 10\) (line 2)

\(x = 1\) (line 3)
Comments:
  • Minus and plus should be minus.
    (From question to line 1, \( - 5 \times 2 = - 10\).)
  • Plus should change to minus (i.e. didn’t multiply \(2\) with \(-4\)).
(In line 1, on LHS, it should be \(-10\).)
  • 1st line forget to \( \times 2\).
    (In line 1, RHS should be \(6x - 8\).)
  • When you open bracket, you need to multiply \(-5\) throughout.
(When you expand the bracket on the LHS, you need to multiply \(-5\) throughout for \(x + 2\).)
  • \(13\) from line 1 should be \(-13\) in line 2.
